Community Advisory Board

The Community Advisory Board (CAB) for Homelessness is a 15 member body of representatives from community organizations, which among other undertakings, recommends how resources from the Federal Government’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy are invested in Brandon. Care has been taken by the Community Advisory Board to ensure the projects which receive funding are sustainable.

Since the CAB’s inception in 2000, the Homelessness Partnering Strategy and its predecessor programs have invested $4.8 million in our community. Though partnership with all levels of government and the non-profit sector, the Homelessness Partner Strategy has leverage an additional $9.2 million dollar investment in our community for a total investment of $14 million dollars.

On November 5, 2010, the federal government made the announcement to continue the Homelessness Partnering Strategy through 2014. Funding will continue at currently level of $440,000 per year. For a full list of capital projects which a received funding, please see the Achievements page.

Beyond making funding recommendations, the CAB has a key coordination role in addressing homelessness in our community. The CAB hired a half-time Program and Administrative Assistant to support the CAB in this capacity. Past and current undertakings of the CAB include:

Community Action Plan

Through broad consultation, a Community Action Plan outlining priorities for Brandon in addressing homelessness (2011-2014) will be completed in 2011. Executive summaries of the updated Action Plan will be made available to the public in Fall 2011.

Lived Experience Subcommittee

The community can learn a lot about how to address homelessness by hearing the insights from those who have experienced it first-hand. The Community Advisory Board (CAB) organized the Lived Experience Subcommittee consisting of 6 people who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing homelessness. The subcommittee provides a qualitative client perspective to advise the CAB as it makes recommendations for Homelessness Partnering Strategy investments in Brandon.

Benevolent Fund

With the organizational help of the CAB, a centralized fund was created using donations from Brandon churches to assist those in need. The fund is administered by the Service Navigators at the 7th St. Access Centre. Money accessed for the fund may be replenished through the Employment and Income Assistance Program. In 2009, 79 people received help through the fund and 50 others were provided referrals. A brochure on the fund is available here.

Innovation

On occasion, CAB provides opportunities for service provider representatives to attend workshops on homelessness and learn about best practices in other areas. Information is subsequently disseminated with relevant groups in our community.

Education

CAB provides workshops and learning session to the community on topics related to Homelessness. Everyone is welcome to attend at no charge. See the Workshops page for information on past and upcoming events.

Cooperation

CAB enhances cooperation and coordination among Service Providers and also among other relevant groups in the community. CAB is represented on both the Brandon Interagency Housing Committee and provides ex-officio representation at the Brandon Poverty Committee.
