Cold Weather Response (Jan, 2012)
We hosted Karen Hoeft, director of the Salvation Army shelter in Winnipeg. Karen gave a presentation and answered questions regarding the operation of a cold weather shelter. More a complete summary of her presentation please see the January, 2012 newsletter article.
Walking Tours of Emergency and Food Security Facilities (October, 2011)
Meet at 1pm in the Home Care Conference Room, Towncentre. We will have a presentation on the Community Advisory Board in Brandon and tour new self-contained Emergency Shelter Units, Helping Hands Soup Kitchen, and the Samaritan House Food Bank.
Motviational Interviewing (March 2011)
Working with people who are homeless presents a challenge even for the most experienced service provider. Don Robinson and Gerald Folster presented on a model of service which incorporates harm reduction, stages of change, and motivational interviewing with the participants of the Wi Che Win Intensive Case Management program. This program is part of the Mental Health Commission of Canada At Home/Chez Soi project.
Housing as a Human Right (December 2010)
The Community Advisory Board for Homelessness hosted a panel discussion entitled Housing as a Human Right: Panel discussion on innovative solutions and harm reduction to prevent addictions from leading to homelessness.
Participating in the panel were three well-known local housing advocates: Judy Judd from the Brandon Regional Health Authority, Glen Kruck, director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, and Desmond Synman with Youth for Christ.
Quality of Life (October 2010)
The CAB invited renounced social scientist Dr. Alex Michalos to deliver a thought provoking presentation on the objective and subjective determinants of quality of life. This event was attended by approximately 25 people.
